Ancient Classification of Music Equipments

Music is as old as human being itself and various kinds of musical instruments have also been discovered from excavations. These instruments, sometimes, significantly helped in determining culture, civilization and peculiarities of any society / civilization of past. Excavations reflect that ancient system which dates back from first century, conspicuously divides these equipments into four classification groups. Firstly, instruments producing sound by vibrating various columns of air. Secondly those instruments which are made of wood or metal. Thirdly, those instruments which are with skin heads. And fourthly, instruments like drums. Charles Mahillon in 1888 also divided instruments into four groups like past as string instruments, then wind instruments, subsequently percussion instruments, and finally drums.
